John Corlis grew up in Colorado Springs, CO, and decided to attend college in California to pursue his dreams of becoming a film composer and songwriter. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Media Composition with a minor in Music Industry Studies from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). For a year, John interned with film composer Ray Colcord, where he learned to be well-versed in all computer programs and skills needed to score picture and produce songs with today’s technology.
John managed to score his first feature film "Death By Engagement" while still in college. His score was nominated for Best Film Underscore at the Melbourne Film Festival. John has scored several other films since including "Murder On The Yellow Brick Road," "Halloween, The Shape Of Horror" which played in select theaters nationwide, "His Name Was Jason," which premiered on Starz, Vh1, and international TV stations, and "Prank" which premiered at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA for the Shriekfest Film Festival, and the film "Gold Mine". John is currently working on two films “Innocent Bystanders” and "To Light". John composed music for the Miramax Scream Documentary "Still Screaming" and it will be released September 6, 2011.
John has written and co-written many songs for established recording artists for placement in films, television, commercials and on internet/radio. John has written with Brian Potter, a Grammy-nominated, Country Music award-winning songwriter and producer, who wrote and produced several #1 hits from the 1970’s, including "Ain't No Women" by the Four Tops, "One Tin Soldier" by Coven, and "Don't Pull your Love," by Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds. Potter produced Glen Campbell's “Rhinestone Cowboy" album. John has worked with Robert Best, one of ASCAP’s top earners for song placement on major networks and in studio films. Also, John has collaborated with writer and actress P.J. Soles, who has co-written songs with J. Steven Soles of Alpha Band fame, as well as with Don Johnson for the film they both starred in entitled “Soggy Bottom U.S.A.” P.J. has had notable roles in "Halloween," "Carrie," "Stripes," and “Rock n’ Roll High School” starring the Ramones. Currently, John has been working with Roxanne Seeman, who has written songs for Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, The Sisters of Mercy, The Jacksons, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Shawn Colvin.
John was one of three finalists and a performer of his original songs at "The Country Music Showcase" which was held by The Music Industry Studies Program at Cal State Northridge and Mike Curb of CURB RECORDS. John is currently recording a country album of original songs, a folk/rock acoustic album of original songs, and collaborating with numerous successful songwriters in a variety of genres.
